Description: This is responsible work involving the performance of non-teaching tasks related to the teaching process in a classroom or school. Incumbents relieve the teaching staff of that part of their duties related to teaching, which may be performed by a non-teacher. The duties of this class differ from those of School Monitor due to the more complex nature of the assignments that are performed, though on a limited basis Teacher Aide may be assigned monitoring duties. A Teacher Aide does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Works with small groups of students, or one-on-one, reinforcing skills taught by a teacher;
  • Helps teacher with bulletin boards, arts and crafts, and the conduct of games;
  • Operates copy machines producing ditto copies, transparencies, and other copied material utilized in the teaching process;
  • Collates copied material;
  • Takes attendance and distributes work folders;
  • Distributes audio-visual equipment and materials;
  • Operates audio-visual equipment;
  • Directs students to classes;
  • Proctors and assists in the conduct of examinations;
  •  May perform incidental duplicating and typing tasks;
  •  Assists in toileting of incontinent children;
  • Assists children in daily living skills;
  • Helps in feeding children who need this service;
  • Assists in transporting non-ambulatory or developmentally disables children;
  • Assists students with behavioral management needs;
  • May supervise students in various settings such as classroom, hall, lunchroom, bus, playground, or parking lot.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS/BOCES:
Per regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.

Description: This is public contact work involving responsibility for directing persons and telephone callers to the proper employee of an agency. An incumbent may also receive and direct callers at the reception desk of an agency or department. Incumbents also perform a variety of clerical and typing tasks. A Reception Clerk does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Receives telephone calls and supplies routine information or refers calls to proper party;

Description: This is routine manual work involving responsibility for the safe and economical operation of a motor vehicle in the delivery and pickup of equipment, supplies, materials, information, and messages. The incumbent may perform basic maintenance or inventory control duties when not making deliveries. The work is performed under general supervision according to set procedures. A Driver/Courier does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Operates a motor vehicle delivering equipment, supplies, materials, messages, and information;
  • Loads and unloads vehicles;
  • Makes special deliveries as assigned;
  • May perform minor repairs on agency equipment and preventive maintenance on vehicles;
  • May perform basic maintenance tasks;
  • May, on occasion, transport personnel from one location to another.

Description: This is primarily routine manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. Work is performed under general supervision according to established procedures. A Cleaner does related work as required.


Typical Work Activities:

  • Sweeps and mops floors and stairs;
  • Dusts chairs, tables, and other furniture;
  • Washes windows, walls, sinks, and other fixtures;
  • Polishes furniture and metal furnishings;
  • Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish;
  • Replaces soap and towels;
  • Waxes floors;
  • Moves and arranges chairs, tables, and other furnishings and equipment;
  • Cleans clothes, equipment, and other laundry items using washing and drying machines;
  • May load and unload materials, parts, or products manually or using a hoist;
  • May shovel snow from sidewalks, stairs, and other passages;
  • May direct facility users to appropriate areas and observe their conduct to report violations facility rules;
  • May open, close, and check building securing windows, locks, and doors;
  • May collect, fold, sort, and distribute laundry and linen items;
  • May perform minor maintenance tasks;
  • May operate motor vehicle to travel from one work site to another


IN JURISDICTIONS WHERE REQUIRED:  Possession and maintenance of the appropriate class NYS driver’s license.

Description: The class involves a wide group of positions involved with the performance of a wide variety of routine manual tasks in a wide variety of work settings. Duties are performed under direct or general supervision depending on the nature of the tasks to be completed. A Laborer does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Load and unloads materials, parts, or products onto or from pallets, carts, or trucks manually or using a hoist;
  • Transports containers of refuse and disposes in refuse boxes or incinerators;
  • Performs a variety of heavy cleaning work, such as washing walls and windows;
  • Acts as a helper to skilled or semi-skilled workers;
  • Shovels snow from sidewalks, stairs, and other passages;
  • Rakes, tamps, and shovels asphalt;
  • Excavates and fills trenches;
  • Charges mixing machines with cement, sand, and stone;
  • Salts and sands streets and roads;

2023-24 Substitute School Nurse (Continuous Recruitment)JP5229

Position: Substitute School Nurse

Division: Exceptional Education

Supervisor: Special Education Area Supervisor

DESCRIPTION:  The work involves responsibility for giving care to students and for performing related nursing services including pupil health screening and notification of defects and communicable disease control. The work is performed under the general supervision of a school physician and/or school administration. Supervision may be exercised over the work of clerical assistants or LPNs. A School Nurse does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Conducts or assists the school physician in the conduct of eye, hearing, and scoliosis testing of students;
  • Administers first aid and emergency treatment to students and employees;
  • Assists at school immunization clinics;
  • Arranges to transport sick or injured students or employees to hospital, home, doctor’s, and dentist’s office in cases of emergency;
  • Inspects the school plant, playground, and cafeteria and reports on general safety and sanitary conditions;
  • Orders, inventories, and oversees the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment;
  • Consults with staff members, school physician, and parents concerning health factors related to nonattendance and communicable diseases;
  • May maintain attendance records of school students;
  • Prepares records and reports as required.

Salary: Starting at $433,360 as per UBTA salary schedule/contract
