Basic Function: The teaching assistant provides direct instructional support to students under the general supervision of a certified teacher. Description: This is responsible work involving the performance of non-teaching tasks relates to the teaching process in a classroom or school. Incumbents relieve the teaching staff of that part of their duties related to teaching, which may be performed by a non-teacher. The duties of this class differ from those of School Monitor due to the more complex nature of the assignments that are performed, though on a limited basis Teacher Aide may be assigned monitoring duties. A Teacher Aide does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Works with small groups of students, or one-on-one, reinforcing skills taught by a teacher;
  • Helps teacher with bulletin boards, arts and crafts, and the conduct of games;
  • Operates copy machines producing ditto copies, transparencies, and other copied material utilized in the teaching process;
  • Collates copied material;
  • Takes attendance and distributes work folders;
  • Distributes audio-visual equipment;
  • Directs students to class;
  • Proctors and assists in the conduct of examinations;
  • May perform incidental duplicating and typing tasks;
  • Assists in toileting of incontinent children;
  • Assists children in daily living skills;
  • Helps in feeding children who need this service;
  • Assists in transporting non-ambulatory or developmentally disabled children;

Position: Speech Pathologist

Division: Special Education - Serving Cattaraugus & Allegany County school districts.

Description: This is a professional position involving responsibility for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of language, voice, and speech disorders. The work is performed upon the written order or referral of a physician who provides medical direction. Supervision of others is not normally a function of this position. A Speech Pathologist does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Provides speech pathology treatment services in accordance with accepted professional standards and practices including muscular coordination exercises, sensory stimulation and association training and language development activities using electronic equipment;
  • Evaluates the degree of function and disability of patients unless contradicted by professional judgment or by the attending physician;
  • Plans and develops remedial programs designed to restore or improve communication efficiency;
  • Maintains program records including but not limited to service budget, monthly statistical reports, listing the number of patients treated, admitted and discharged, evaluations, reevaluations, types of conditions seen and number of patients on a visiting list for evaluations or treatment programs;
  • Consults with Medical Director on subjects of a professional medical nature;
  • Integrates treatment plans into total care plans in consultation with patients, physicians and other personnel providing patient care;
  • Participates in patient care review conferences;
  • Develops or assists in the development of speech pathology policies and procedures;
  • Records on patients charts all evaluations, re-evaluations, progress notes, consultations and discharge summaries;
  • Assists in the development of and participates in the facility's in-service education program.

DESCRIPTION: The work involves responsibility for performing occupational therapy casework in a program designed to meet the needs of individuals referred to the program through the use of such activities as creative, manual, industrial, educational, recreational, social, and self-help activities in order to enable individuals to achieve optimal levels of self-help and productivity. The work may be carried out in community, school, hospital, or nursing home settings in accordance with written prescriptions or a referral from a physician who provides medical direction. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Occupational Therapy Assistants, Aides, and clerical employees. An Occupational Therapist does related work as required.
  
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Plans programs and performs procedures involving activities such as manual arts and crafts, practice in function, prevocational, vocational and homemaking skills, and activities of daily living; 
  • Conducts sensitizer, educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help individuals regain physical or mental functioning or adjust to handicaps; 
  • Evaluates the degree of function and disability of individuals unless contraindicated by professional judgment or a physician’s notes; 
  • Develops a treatment plan based upon doctor’s findings, short- and long-term rehabilitation goals, and in accordance with the physician’s diagnosis, prescription, or referral; 
  • Records evaluation, re-evaluations, progress notes, consultations, and summaries; 
  • May participate in the selection of personnel in the occupational therapy program and assign their duties and provide supervision; 
  • Observes occupational therapy activities to evaluate staff effectiveness in the provision of service and to evaluate the effectiveness of the activity in providing the necessary therapeutic services for patients; 
  • Fabricates and applies hand splints, trains individuals in the use of adaptive assistive devices and/or self-help techniques to achieve maximum independence; 
  • Participates with other personnel in the formulation of total care plans; 
  • Confers periodically with a physician regarding facets of care and related activities; 
  • Develops or assists in the development of occupational therapy policies and procedure;
  • May perform in specialties such as pediatric or gerontologist occupational therapy;
